I know how some people see me. I’m the guy who cracks a joke to ease the tension. The first to want to smooth turbulent waters. The guy who shows up, even if he should take a hint and back off.

I’ve been told I have Golden Retriever energy. That I’m the perfect friend-zone. Mr. Reliable, always armed with a laugh.

After our parents chose to split us up between two different packs, I spent a long time suppressing my own personality. I thought I needed to be more like Mason, who has always been the more obvious first choice for an Alpha. More driven and focused. Serious in a way that I naturally wasn’t. I tried really hard to show my father and the Cross Mountain Pack that I would someday be a great Alpha.

And I was miserable every step of the way.

I spent countless nights lying awake in bed wondering why I wasn’t happier or enjoying my life more. I looked around and my life wasn’t bad, but it also didn’t feel like it fit, and I felt so fucking guilty for it. I could never pinpoint what was missing, until now.

We’re gathered around Katherine’s dining table sharing a makeshift meal of frozen chicken nuggets, homemade chicken noodle soup, and chips and salsa. It’s an odd pairing, but she wasn’t exactly prepared to feed all of us.

Quinn tried to offer to do a grocery run, but Kristoffer shut that down. He didn’t say much, but the way he’s hovering around both her and his daughter gives away how worried he is about their safety.

And he’s not alone. I don’t like how things have been going down. If staying safe means eating like a college student during finals, then so be it.

This moment, surrounded by this makeshift sort of family that seems to have fallen together, is almost perfect. The only thing I would choose to change is the way my brother slightly slumps in his chair at the opposite end of the table. He’s grown surlier as the night wears on.

He didn’t have to come in if he didn’t want to. He had every opportunity to leave, go home and become the strong Alpha I don’t doubt he would be. No one can make the choice for him—whether it’s giving up this life or the other one.

We all know that nobody gets to have it all. Willem and I, at least, are both solid. We’re all in, and there’s no going back. Ever.

I have a feeling we shouldn’t count Kristoffer out either. As the night’s worn on, it’s becoming startlingly clear that there’s no love lost between him and the Red Ash Pack. He’s made plenty of snide comments over dinner.

So from where I’m sitting, it seems like it’s down to Mason and Sailor. And with Sailor, I’m honestly not sure what kind of choice he faces. I’ve picked up enough details to know his home pack was somehow lost and his presence at Axis was about working toward getting it back.
